What this site does is set out what the published research says about three well-studied peptides — BPC-157, ipamorelin and tirzepatide — and, just as plainly, what that research cannot say.
The largest thing it cannot say is what is inside any particular vial. A published study reports on material that was weighed, tested for purity (assayed) and documented before it reached an animal or a person. Material moving outside that system carries no such record. That gap matters more than most readers expect. If the contents of a preparation are unknown, then any effect attributed to it is unattributable: it could be the molecule, it could be something else in the vial, and it could be nothing at all.

Identity, purity, legitimacy — the three questions the literature keeps raising
Read enough peptide papers and the same three questions surface, never as the subject of the paper but always in its margins.
Identity. Every study on this desk names a defined molecule. BPC-157 is a specified fifteen-residue sequence taken from a protein found in gastric juice. Ipamorelin is a five-residue amide, Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2, built from an earlier growth-hormone-releasing peptide by deleting a central dipeptide [11]. Tirzepatide is a thirty-nine-residue chain carrying a fatty-diacid arm that binds albumin, and it was the first approved dual incretin agonist, engaging both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors from one molecule [14]. A study can make claims about those molecules because the material it used was characterised before the experiment began. A label is not characterisation.
Purity. The published record contains no assay of the preparations that circulate outside formal research. There is no register of what those preparations contain, no independent sampling programme reported in the peer-reviewed literature, and therefore no honest way to state a figure for how often such material matches its label. The absence of that data is itself the finding, and this desk reports it as one rather than filling the hole with an invented number.
Legitimacy. A 2025 narrative review of BPC-157 for musculoskeletal healing concluded that human data remain extremely limited, that rigorous large-scale trials are lacking, and that the compound is best treated as investigational given both regulatory controversy and non-regulated availability [2]. That is a literature review flagging the distribution problem as a scientific problem, not a commercial one — because uncharacterised material corrupts the evidence base that later reviewers have to read.
What the phrase ‘research peptide’ actually covers
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins, assembled into a much shorter string. Because the body already uses peptides as signals, a synthetic peptide can be built to imitate one of those signals and switch a receptor on or off with considerable precision.
‘Research peptide’ is not a scientific category. It is a distribution category. It describes material offered under a research-use-only designation, which is a statement about permitted use rather than a statement about what the material contains. It is not a purity grade, it is not a certification, and it carries no assay obligation that a reader could inspect. Two preparations bearing the same designation can differ completely in content, and the designation alone gives no way to tell.
The three compounds on this desk are usually discussed together under that label even though they sit in three unrelated pharmacological classes. BPC-157 is described as a cytoprotective peptide whose repair effects in animals track the growth of new blood vessels [4]. Ipamorelin is a growth hormone secretagogue that triggers a pulse of growth hormone from the pituitary without meaningfully raising cortisol or prolactin [11]. Tirzepatide is a dual incretin agonist that engages both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors from a single chain [14]. Their only shared property is that all three are peptides.
Three molecules, three completely different legal positions
Regulatory status is not a property of a molecule. It is a property of a dossier — of who filed what evidence, with which agency, for which indication. The three compounds here make that concrete, because their chemistry has nothing to do with how differently they are treated.
Tirzepatide is FDA-approved: first for type 2 diabetes in May 2022 [14], later for chronic weight management, and subsequently for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity. Approved formulations are prescription-only. Ipamorelin has never been approved as a drug anywhere; its one published Phase 2 trial missed its primary endpoint [8], and in 2024 the FDA removed ipamorelin acetate from Category 2 of the interim 503A bulk-substances list and reviewed it at a Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee meeting. BPC-157 is not approved anywhere either, and in 2023 the FDA placed it in a category of substances identified as not eligible for pharmacy compounding pending further evaluation.
The molecule does not change across those three positions. What changes is the paperwork standing behind it, and with the paperwork, everything a reader can reasonably assume about the material in front of them. An approved product is manufactured under an inspected quality system and dispensed against a prescription. An unapproved compound carries none of that, whatever the sequence written on the label happens to say.
Both BPC-157 and ipamorelin are also prohibited in sport at all times — BPC-157 under the World Anti-Doping Agency's non-approved-substances category, ipamorelin under the peptide hormones and growth factors category, where accredited laboratories have established urine detection methods.
